Smart Outfit, Dumb Outfit – Episode 1

Buy This Not That

Recently I’ve spent copious amounts of time on a website called Polyvore. Imagine Facebook, take away Farmville and all the annoying people who play it, then add shoes. Lots and LOTS of shoes. That’s Polyvore. A network of friends who create sets of clothing and share them with each other and comment on each other’s creations.

Last night, I did a little work and I did it for you. You can probably guess what these two outfits represent.

Indeed, a smart outfit and a dumb outfit. (The dumb one is the expensive one. Duh.) One totals $270, one totals $3684. Can you guess which is which?

But naturally, that isn’t the point. The point is, whether you’re rich or poor, a label snob or a wal-mart regular, it is very clear based on these two ensembles that looking well put together does not require a ton of money. Only a sharp eye and patience for a bargain. If I could have found this outfit at the Goodwill and shown one that totaled $45, I would have done it for you. I love you that much. But unfortunately the Goodwill does not have a website. Lucky for my wallet.

This outfit is my representation of spring. Fresh colors, simple shapes, shimmery jewelry. It’s an outfit I’d like to wear to my job, if my job was Assistant to The Cat in The Hat.

Alright alright… I’ll let you guess which set is expensive and which is affordable. Tomorrow morning I’ll reveal the weennahhhhhs. Ready go!

Ciao!

Yay, I’m first! Me first! I want to BE The Cat In The Hat, if you’re going to be my assistant! LOL!

My guess is left, smart; right, dumb. Am I right? Am I right?

And for the record, I am NOT where Miriam learned her fashion sense (anyone who sees me regularly knows this), so I don’t have an unfair advantage just because I’m her mom. Except that I CAN read her mind once in awhile…

I’m with your mom — the one on the right is the more expensive. Are we right? Are we right? What is the prize? If we get to be the Cat in the Hat’s assistants, can we get one of those great little pets with the really long hair to comb?

i agree with the one on the right being more expensive, and my answer is based solely on the SHOES! i can spot an expensive pair especially next to the cheaper version……also, the purse/bag is way more expensive on the right too. so what did we all win?? 🙂

Well, you all win nothing, unfortunately, because the outfit on the LEFT costs $3,678 and the outfit on the RIGHT costs $270. I LOVE IT! Thank you all for proving my point so very well! Labels mean nothing. Exuding a certain “feel” or “idea” is what fashion is all about. And it has as much to do with your demeanor while wearing the clothes as it has to do with the clothes themselves!

    Love you ladies!
P.S. Sorry it took me so long to post which was which! 🙂

I’m happy to say that I actually like the look of the outfit on the right WAY more than the one on the left…LOVE the skir on the right, the sweater is way cute, and I think the shoes look more dainty and feminine! And the bracelet is chunky and fabulous.
